Dr. Lori FormanAPCSS Development Advisor Defense, diplomacy and development are critical elements in the U.S. National Security Strategy. In keeping with that strategy, the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies is designating Dr. Lori Forman as “Development Advisor.”    Currently a faculty member at APCSS, Forman brings to the position high-level development experience in the U.S. Government. She previously served as Assistant Administrator for Asia at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and U.S. Alternate Executive Director at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Popularity of APOC continues as course concludes with 148 Fellows

One hundred forty-eight American and international Fellows completed the popular one-week Asia-Pacific Orientation Course to become the second largest class in APCSS history on June 7.  Although the majority of Fellows were from U.S. Pacific Command and other on-island major component commands as well as the U.S. Coast Guard, USAID, and U.S. Strategic Command, this class also included non-U.S. participants.  Eighteen international Fellows attended the course from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, and Taiwan.  The course structure utilized a mix of plenary lectures, panels, brown bag lunches, seminar discussions and elective-seminars, a venue that continues to be successful in allowing the [...]

"Hawk" Carlisle, Commander, Pacific Air Forces; Air Component Commander for U.S. Pacific Command; and Executive Director, Pacific Air Combat Operations Staff, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, visited APCSS today to provide a presentation on strategic decision making in transnational leadership to ASC 13-1 Fellows in the Center auditorium. After his presentation, Gen. Carlisle took several questions from ASC Fellows and posed for photos with them before being escorted by APCSS Director Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Dan Leaf. Ambassador Rick Barton, Assistant Secretary of State for Conflict and Stabilization Operations (COS) and Coordinator for Reconstruction and Stabilization meets with APCSS Deputy Director Brig. Gen. James Hirai USA (ret.) March 25 for a roundtable discussion with staff and faculty. Amb. Barton's visit to Hawaii is his second stop on a two week long visit to the region which included meeting with political leaders and representatives in Myanmar.

Eighty-five complete CSRT 13-1

Eighty-five Fellows from 40 locations graduated today from the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies’ Comprehensive Security Responses to Terrorism (CSRT) Course in Honolulu.  Of the 85 participants, 70% were from military organizations with others representing law enforcement, intelligence, foreign affairs, state owned infrastructure operators, and the United Nations.  Three-fifths were from the Asia-Pacific region, with five continents participating in the course. Fellows participating in CSRT were from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Belize, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, China, Colombia, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, Fiji, Guyana, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Kiribati, Laos, Lebanon, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mongolia, Mozambique and Nepal.  They also came from Oman, Papua New [...]

APCSS Dean of Academics to step down this summer

Retired Ambassador Lauren Kahea Moriarty plans to step down as Dean of Academics at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in August 2013, the Center announced today.  Located in Honolulu, the Center is a U.S. Department of Defense institution that provides executive education to security practitioners from around the Asia-Pacific region. Thirty-nine Fellows completed the Senior Executive Asia-Pacific Orientation Course (SEAPOC) 13-1 at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies today. Six international Fellows attended the course from Australia (2), Canada (3) and New Zealand (1). The remaining 33 Fellows are from the U.S. SEAPOC provides an overview of the Asia-Pacific region to senior military officers with respect for greater demands on their time and existing basis of knowledge.
