“The knowledge and connections we built here strengthen our region against the complex security challenges we face together,” remarked a participant as the inaugural Indo-Pacific Senior Enlisted Leaders Subject Matter Expert Exchange (IPSEL SMEE) drew to a close. This groundbreaking event, proposed by former USINDOPACOM Commander Admiral John Aquilino and Fleet Master Chief David Isom, united 55 senior enlisted advisors and leaders from 21 Indo-Pacific nations in Honolulu, Hawaii, April 15-19, 2024.

The Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies recently graduated 27 Fellows from the Transnational Security Course (TSC) 23-2, closing out the Center’s slate of course offerings for the 2023 calendar year. From December 3-9, the senior leaders received lectures on crucial security issues in the Indo-Pacific region. DKI APCSS faculty shed light on topics such as the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy, China’s Perspectives on the Indo-Pacific, Cybersecurity, Maritime Security, and modernizing partner and alliance relationships. The Daniel K. Inouye Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies recently concluded its Indo-Pacific Orientation Course (IPOC) 23-3, from Nov. 13-17. This event marked a milestone in the center’s history as its largest in-person course, with 157 Fellows participating. Holding the course entirely in person, moving away from previous virtual formats due to COVID-19, contributed to this record attendance.

Dr. Sungmin Cho, professor at the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, presented research during a program organized by The Korea Society. The research analyzed Chinese texts focusing on North Korea's regime stability, the country's uncertain future, and the potential unification of the Korean Peninsula. The research encompasses a review of 62 Chinese journal articles and 29 expert commentaries written by Chinese scholars. Cho explains how examining the writings of Chinese civilian scholars helps decipher Chinese strategic thinking despite censorship.
